ActoGeniX is focused on the development and commercialization of ActoBiotics™, a novel class of oral biopharmaceuticals for the targeted treatment of severe diseases with substantial medical need.
|
ActoBiotics™ are created by applying the TopAct™ technology platform, and deliver therapeutically active proteins or peptides to patients via oral administration rather than injection. ActoGeniX and its collaborators have established positive proof-of-concept with ActoBiotics™ in a wide variety of disease models, creating a diverse and broad product portfolio.
AG013, the Company’s lead product, is currently being developed for the treatment of oral mucositis. In May 2009, the FDA approved ActoGeniX’s IND application, allowing the Company to initiate a phase 1B clinical trial with AG013 in cancer patients at risk of developing oral mucositis. Meanwhile, ActoGeniX has started this clinical study in collaboration with several reputed oncology centers in the US. The primary aim of the study is to evaluate safety and tolerability of AG013, but it will also allow collection of initial efficacy data.

ActoGeniX is headquartered in Ghent (Belgium) and employs around 20 people, half of whom have a PhD, MD, or PharmD qualification. The Company has recruited an experienced senior management team, and has established a worldwide network of collaborations with leading clinicians and academic institutions. The Company has raised a total amount of €35.5 million (approximately US$50 million) via two rounds of equity capital financing, by a syndicate of prominent life science investors. In addition, ActoGeniX has received important grants from the Institute for Promotion of Innovation by Science and Technology in Flanders (IWT), to support the expansion of the Company’s proprietary technology platform and the development of novel ActoBiotics™.
ActoGeniX has a strong and broad intellectual property position. Its patent estate encompasses more than 20 distinct patent families, covering the concept of TopAct™ and ActoBiotics™, including their production and containment, as well as multiple therapeutic applications. Importantly, broad patent claims have already been granted in major territories such as the United States, Europe and Japan. This puts ActoGeniX in a unique position to successfully exploit the commercial potential of this promising new class of biopharmaceutical products.
